The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations were announced and once again Duran Duran was not among those listed. Surprisingly, even though she had some momentum and nominations over the last couple years, Pat Benatar was also not listed.
The qualifications to be nominated are that it must be 25 years or more since your debut album, and the judges look for the artist to have significant contributions to rock and roll.
This year’s nominees:
Jay-Z, Carole King, Tina Turner, Mary J. Blige, Kate Bush, Devo, Foo Fighters, The Go-Go's, Iron Maiden, Chaka Khan, Fela Kuti, LL Cool J, New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine, Todd Rundgren and Dionne Warwick.
Yes, these people are worthy of being included. Carole King and Tina Turner not in the Hall already is not right (though Carole is probably in the songwriting hall of fame and Tina is probably in the Rock hall with Ike). Devo has been overlooked for years. I don’t know that some of these artists were pivotal in shaping the music of their era, but art is subjective.
The Go-Gos are very deserving, and they can probably thank the doc that was out last year for the nom; the powerful film pretty much spelled out how groundbreaking they were.
Fans can vote for their favorite, though last year’s fan vote winners Dave Matthews and Pat Benatar were still not allowed into the exclusive musical club.
