Why is Ponyboy Named Ponyboy?

In The Outsiders book and movie, there is no explanation why Ponyboy’s parents named him Ponyboy. He states that it’s on his birth certificate and that his dad was “original.”

Author S.E. Hinton doesn’t add much to answer this question, tweeting that Michael is Ponyboy’s middle name, which he probably went by later in life.
