First Crush: Andy Gibb

‘80s Girl First Crush

There are a lot of ‘80s superstars that I remember having on my wall, playing their records, buying magazines with them in it. But if you were to ask me who my very first crush was, instantly Andy Gibb is who I would say. Don’t have to think about it. His hit songs must’ve timed with whatever age you first start to get crushes. Or in my case (I’m a notorious late-bloomer) whatever age I first got crushes.

Andy Gibb was obviously related to the Brothers Gibb, the Bee Gees, and in my memory his music held it’s own against the juggernaut that was the Bee Gees music catalog. He definitely didn’t eclipse them with record sales, but he had big hits. You can hear Barry Gibb’s influence on several songs (and very strongly on “Desire”) Andy still manages to have a sound of his own.

“Shadow Dancing”

“(Love is) Thicker Than Water”

“I Just Want to Be Your Everything”

“An Everlasting Love”

“(Our Love) Don’t Throw It All Away”

“Desire”

All reached the US Top 20 as did “I Can’t Help It,” a duet with Olivia Newton-John. His duet with then girlfriend Victoria Principal “All I Have to Do Is Dream” peaked at 25.

I still listen to Andy Gibb music, it’s fantasticallyfabulouslyamazinglygood.
